Sasha Velour’s NIGHTGOWNS

1/1

If you don’t know Sasha Velour, get ready. The high-concept, high-fashion drag queen and visual artist first came to national attention in 2017, when she won season 9 of the Emmy-winning reality TV competition RuPaul's Drag Race. Her finale lip-sync to “So Emotional” by Whitney Houston was called “the performance of the year” by the AV Club and named one of “TV’s Best Musical Moments on Television” by Entertainment Weekly. NPR dubbed her “A New American Monarch.” Her rallying cry to her fans as she was crowned? "Let’s change the motherfucking world!”

Two years and 1.6 million Instagram followers later, Sasha is continuing her mission to share her global platform with other artists and bring the drag that she loves to new and growing audiences. Full of heart, humor, and a hell of a lot of glitter, Nightgowns follows Sasha over the course of eight episodes as she adapts her monthly revue, Nightgowns, into a full-on stage production—and the biggest drag showcase of her life.

Part performance documentary, part portrait of the artist, we’ll watch her work with each member of her weird and wonderful ensemble to craft the lip sync performances of their wildest dreams. Each installment draws us to one performer in particular, and reveals their daily life, process, and backstory,  culminating in a 2-3 minute made-for-mobile visual expression of their live number, directed by legendary music video director Sophie Muller. The result will be something new: live drag, designed for the screen. Eight iconic, shareable, must-watch performances that redefine what drag can be.

Executive Produced by Sasha Velour and produced by the Academy Award-nominated producers at The Documentary Group.
